Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED

The Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5G ED is a wide angled zoom meant for the digital SLR cameras of the DX format.

Nikon, for the first time in 2003 offered a DX wide angle lens. Gradually it added to its kitty is the Nikkor AF-S DX 12-24/4 G, a very high quality but slightly expensive wide angle lens. However, with the launch of the Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5G ED in 2009, Nikon broke even and reached out to a lot of customers who found it to be very useful and affordable. Priced at €750/$800, it isn’t really cheap, but compared to the F-S DX 12-24/4 G, the price is more reliable.

Good quality plastic has been used to create the body of the device and this makes it hardy and attractive. There are two rings – one for focus and the other for zoom and both work rather smoothly, without any trouble or wastage of time

Since the lens sports the silent wave feature, it becomes compatible with every single digital SLR from the house of Nikon, including the auto focus lacking entry-level models.  The auto focus function of the Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5G ED is very quick and quiet and thus makes it a pleasure to work with. And since it is a lens in the G category, the auto focus comes without the aperture ring

The lens marginally elongates while zooming. When at its shortest, it measures roughly 14mm and at its longest it stands at 24mm. the focal length is10mm.

The tube in which the lens moves while zooming is fairly tough and so there is no kind of shaking or trembling at all. The lens in the front does not turn on so you can easily use a polarizer as and when needed
However, some distortion is noticed since the length of focus (which is 10 mm) is rather large. It stands at about 3.1%, which is definitely more than that of the other cameras in the range. But you need not worry, since the lens manages the distortions very well. This is possible since the length of focus is so long. Barrel to pincushion distortion ranges between 14 to 18mm.
Mostly all lenses that have a minimized circle created exclusively for APS-C DSLRs, generally portray some vignetting. This, however, does not happen with the Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5G ED, even though there is a 0.75 lag penalty. This gives the lens an edge over the others and users find it easy to work with.
The Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5G ED is a very good product and fits well among the ultra-wide zoom lenses. The design is fresh and the body is built with good quality products. The auto focus is fast and quiet. You can click high resolution images after focusing very accurately at the object. It has standard levels of vignetting and CAs.
The barrel distortion can at times be a bit too much and this becomes an annoying problem. Often the corners display extreme distortion. This makes one believe that the wide zoom range is a bit forced and unnatural.
The lens, overall, is a great product from the house of Nikon. It is perfectly suited for entry-level digital SLRs and amateur photographers. At 460g and 83 mm (diameter) x 87 mm (length), the model is not very heavy or bulky and can be carried about easily. On the whole the lens helps in taking some very good quality photographs in high resolution. However, the qualities of the images also depend on the skill of the photographer.

Nikon

Updating Distortion Control Lens Data

—Windows—

Thank you for choosing a Nikon product. This guide describes how to update distortion control lens data. If you are not confident that you can perform the update successfully, the update can be performed by a Nikon-authorized service representative. See the camera manual for information on camera operations

Get ready

To perform the update, you will need:
The camera
A computer equipped with a card reader or card slot
One of the following camera power sources:
 — An AC adapter
 — A fully-charged rechargeable Li-ion battery of a type supported by the camera
A Nikon-approved memory card that has been formatted in the camera (note that all data on the memory card will be deleted when the card is formatted; before formatting the card, back up any data you wish to keep to a computer or other device)
The camera User’s Manual

Check the current lens data version

The menus displayed on your camera may differ from those shown here.

1Turn the camera on.

2Press MENU to display the menus.

3Select Firmware version in the setup menu.

4
Confirm that the distortion control lens data version (L) is one to which this update applies.
“#.###” is the distortion control data version.

5Exit to the setup menu and turn the camera off.

Download and extract the new lens data

1Click the I agree - Begin download link on the download site to download the file to your computer.

2Double-click the downloaded file to start the installer. If a “User Account Control” dialog is displayed, click Yes or Continue.

3Select a language and click Next.
If the desired language is not displayed, click Region Selection and choose a different region. The language-selection dialog may not be displayed if you have previously installed other Nikon software.

4Click Next.

5After reading the license agreement, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next to begin installation.

6Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. When installation is complete, confirm that a “Nikon” folder has been created on the desktop and check that it contains the following items:
  • NKLD#####.BIN: Distortion control lens data; ##### represents the version number
  • Legal: A folder containing the license agreement.

Copy the lens data to the memory card

The data can be copied to the camera memory card using a computer equipped with a card reader or card slot.

1Insert a formatted memory card in the card reader or card slot. If Nikon Transfer or ViewNX 2 is installed, Nikon Transfer or Nikon Transfer 2 may start automatically; exit the application before proceeding.

Windows 7/Vista
Under Windows 7/Vista, an AutoPlay dialog may be displayed. Click .

Windows XP
Under Windows XP, a Removable Disk dialog may be displayed. Click Cancel.

2Copy “NKLD#####.BIN” to the memory card (##### represents the distortion control data version).
When copying is complete, confirm that the memory card contains the file “NKLD#####.BIN”, where ##### represents the distortion control data version.

Important
Be sure to copy the lens data to the root directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new data if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.

3If your computer shows the memory card as a removable disk, right-click the removable disk and select Eject from the menu that appears. Remove the memory card from the card reader or card slot.

The menus displayed on your camera may differ from those shown here.

During the update, do not:
Remove the memory card
Turn the camera off
Operate any of the camera controls
Attach or remove lenses
Unplug or disconnect the AC adapter
Remove the battery
Subject the camera to powerful electromagnetic noise
Any of the above actions could cause the camera to become inoperable.

1Insert the memory card containing the lens data into the camera.

Cameras with Two Memory Card Slots
